Why the Bee?
The Inspiration Behind the Sculpture
The bee is the perfect symbol for Mills Albert Bee in the City. Its iconic yellow and black colours echo Wellington’s vibrancy, while its life in a hive represents community, collaboration, and working together – values at the heart of both the trail and Life Flight Trust.

Just like bees flying from flower to flower, Life Flight aircraft carry skilled teams across the country, bringing life-saving care to those in urgent need.
The dynamic bee is always on the move – and will encourage trail followers to get busy and find all the sculptures!
Conservation – The global bee population is struggling due to environmental issues and threats to the bees’ habitat. These important messages can be brought to life through the Learning Programme.
For many New Zealanders, the bee also sparks fond childhood memories of the iconic buzzy bee toy, combining nostalgia with creativity and playfulness.

By following the trail, visitors can enjoy the art, celebrate community, and reflect on the ways we all contribute to a thriving, buzzing city.
Each giant sculpture gives local artists a canvas to celebrate these ideas, while Medium Bees created by schools and community groups invite young people to engage with art and community in a hands-on way.
